We asked promoter Paul Joseph a few quezzies ahead of the birthday this Saturday.
1. What is about the 80s you love so much?
The music is just outstanding. The tail end of disco meets new wave. New technologies changing the face of music. MTV and the video age ushering a new form of pop star.
2. What’s your funniest memory at Athena?
There are many, most of them involve wigs!
3. Have any 80s stars been?
Not so far as I know. I’d love to get Jimmy Somerville in, or Vix from Fuzzbox. (Jimmy, if you're reading this...).
4. Who’s your favourite singer/band of the 80s and why?
Madonna for the tunes, the style and, of course, the ambition .
5. What’s your number one weapon to get the dance floor going?
Self Control by Laura Branigan.
6. Kiss, Marry, Kill - give us your three from the 80s.
Kiss the beautiful actor Jon-Erik Hexum. Blue-eyed hottie of the decade but tragically killed in an on-set accident in 1984.
Marry He-Man cos he’s a Prince as well as a Hunk.
Kill - well I’d be too late but the real life super villain of the decade, Margaret Thatcher, of course.
7. For the uninitiated, what can people expect?
A wide range of music from across the decade - and not just the obvious songs. Some 80s tunes you may have forgotten or never heard in a club before. Big Whitney bangers and the odd Power Ballad Accompanied by my bespoke video mixes that have pop videos, old adverts, tv clips and other camp moments from the decade. Yes, that does include the Dynasty opening credits and the Volleyball scene from Top Gun.
This weekend we’ll have our resident floor hosts The Poster Girls back - Think the girls from The Human League shimmying up to you at the bar but with bigger hair and maybe a free glass of fizz. And, of course, as ever, a fun and very friendly crowd.
