Miley Cyrus - We Can’t Stop
I wasn’t much of a Miley fan until pretty recently tbh - but I’ve fallen in love with her ballsy attitude and raspy rock voice. This is my fave Miley track, but was a close one!
Lizzo - Juice
My favourite rising star of 2019 by some distance. She just exudes joy, positivity, inclusivity and love.
Lady Gaga - Applause
I'm a recent convert to this track, having dismissed it when it first came out. Whenever I play this out, the peeps go crazy for it. Possibly my favourite Gaga banger.
Deuce - On The Bible
Call them the proto-Steps if you like, but this wipes the floor with any of that group’s output. LIVE for that choir breakdown!
Britney - Baby One More Time
Say what you want about Britney, but you can’t argue with the hits. This was just world-conquering.
All Saints - Pure Shores
A brilliant combination of sassy girlband and savvy producer. AND their new stuff is incredible. Spice Girls could never.
Girls Aloud - Love Machine
Girls Aloud were actually incredible. The most off-the-wall run of pop singles that ever existed. Epitomises the brilliance of pop music in the 2000s.
Nick Kamen - I Promised Myself
The UK had long forgotten about Nick by the time this came out in 1990. A perfect pop record, which - shock! - was written by the man himself. File under ‘should have been huge’.
Giorgio Moroder & Phil Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams
Of course, I could have filled this entire list with 80s pop gems but I've singled this out as it makes me teary every time I hear it - I become quite overwhelmed (same with 3 Lions, for some reason).
Kylie - Better The Devil You Know
AKA Kylie, Queen Of Gays. 30+ years since her debut and I still get warm, fuzzy emotions when I hear her music. She exudes an infectious optimism whenever she performs live. So many to choose from, but this is such a brilliantly crafted pop song, it just sneaks ahead of the rest.
Pop Tarts is this Saturday at The Eagle from 9pm. Free entry before 10 and £3 pints & doubles 4 singles till 11.
