Debbie Turns Seven!

Promoters Xander Bernhard and Sina Sparrow talk to us about their homage to the musical Goddess.

So is the night named after Debbie Harry, Debbie McGee or some other Debbie?

Sina: Debbie Harry pops up on most of our flyers, and is the spiritual mother and the core inspiration for Debbie the Club. But we love all Debbie’s.

What got you into the cutthroat world of gay club promoting?

X: This wasn't planned. We started off playing music mostly for our friends, in a tiny basement in Stoke Newington.

S: I asked Xander to help out me on the first night cos I needed someone to cover the decks when I went to the loo…

X: It was so much fun, that I decided that I was a resident DJ. Sina’s been too nice to tell me otherwise.

For the uninitiated how best describes the party?

S: I think our tagline ’The Cult of female pop, rock & Disco’ pretty much covers it.

X: For years we used to talk about how much fun it would be to go to a club that only played music with female vocals. We both had pretty broad tastes genre wise and we like mixing cheesy pop, with grimy indie via some classic 70’s divas. We try and keep it fun, unpretentious, and a little bit shambolic - thats’ a Debbie trademark for sure.

S: And we always have performances running through the night. Our hostesses Stella Meltdown and Cassandra like to put on an act and show off for the crowd - and maybe try and get them involved too.

Seven years for a gay club night is the equivalent of a Diamond Jubilee - what’s your secret to such a good innings?

S: I don’t think we have a secret. We just turn up at The Eagle every month. No one tells us not to. Luckily we manage to pull in a crowd who like what we do.

X: To be fair, they may have told us not to come back, and we haven’t noticed. We’re very thick-skinned.

What’s been your most memorable Debbie moment/anecdote?

S:When our previous venue {redacted} burnt down?

X: You can’t say that! (To be clear, it wasn’t us.) What about when Baby Lame and Crystal Beth did their 5th Element themed act, which was brilliant, but no one but us could hear the music? That was our fault - we’re not the most technically skilled DJs around. Sina doesn't even use headphones!

S: Did we mention that we’re bit shambolic? Fuck ups aside, our first Pride party at the Eagle really stands out. The place was rammed, the atmosphere was incredible, the crowd was so up for it and cheering every time we played a new song.

X: Pride 2017! Yes, that was brilliant, pure joy all night long. We’d never done a Debbie on Pride before, and we were worried that no one would come. It was our busiest night ever.

S: Well, until Pride 2018!

Which female singer, dead or alive, would be your ultimate PA and why?

S: is Debbie Harry too obvious?

X: Yes! What about 80’s Madonna?

S: Cos that’s not obvious?

X: Okay. Laura Nyro then.

S: You and I would like that, I dunno about anyone else.

If you were a mega famous diva what would your rider be?

S: A box of kittens.

X: Each! And what else?

S: A few bags of peanut M&Ms?

X: We’re easily pleased.

Who would be the guests for the ultimate Debby dinner party?

X: Obviously Sina’s going to say Debbie Harry!

S: Of course. And Edith Massey.

X: Cos we’ll need eggs. I want to invite Shampoo to find out where they’ve been.

S: Yes! And speaking of long lost twosomes, how about The Reynolds Girls.

X: So that’s Stevie Nicks off the list then. Oh, Romy and Michele - our role models

S: And the quest of honour, the log lady from Twin Peaks.

X: RIP.

What’s your biggest diva moment?

S: Xander’s always having diva moments. I don’t think I could pick just one.

X: Its true, I get stressed and shout if things don’t go to plan. - which they rarely do. Poor Sina bears the brunt because he’s usually closest.

S: And you’re too scared to shout at the drag queens.

S: Well apart from our favourite hits from your favourite female singers - which pretty much goes without saying, I know that Stella and Cassandra have got BIG plans for their performance.

X: And The Eagle have created a special drink for the night…

S: The Bloody Debbie!

X: Served by a very special Stoli Trolley Dolly. And there are 2 for 1 drinks before 11. So get there early. I can’t wait, its going to be so much fun.

S: And probably very messy.
